Road Train Technology

newscientist.com

New Scientist reports on an automatic driving system being developed and tested for the first time in Sweden. Cars are linked together wirelessly to form a “train” of semi-autonomous convoys controlled by a lead vehicle driven by a human. Researchers are hoping that road speeds can be reduced, improve fuel efficiency, and cut congestion. A navigation and communication system measures the car’s speed and direction and constantly makes adjustments. Steering and speed are all automatic.
